My first job was at a CD store in the mall (simultaneously with being a waitress at a chinese food restaurant and working at a clothing store. Thats right. I worked three fucking jobs in grade ten.) in 2004. I remember that when Carl Newman’s first album came out, I had no idea who the New Pornographers were because I was a sarcastic little shit who only liked loud/bad/fast music, Pavement, The Fugees and soft pop from Calgary. Upon hearing The Slow Wonder for the first time at the store, because someone tried to steal it and I CAUGHT THEM SO I THOUGHT HEY THIS ALBUM MUST BE WORTH SOMETHING, I basically fell in love with this man, who was singing me secrets that I’d wanted to hear forever but never knew it. Upon delving further into things, I discovered The New Pornographers and subsequently a thousand million other bands that I now love and who are amazing and Can Con is the best and I don’t care that he is forty three, I would still marry him (if he weren’t married to the woman from Matador or whatever), or at least nanny his kids for really cheap.
